Richard C. Vie
Chairman of the Board of Directors, U.S. Navy Memorial
Mr. Vie is Chairman Emeritus of Unitrin Inc., a financial services company providing insurance and consumer finance products and services.
Mr. Vie began his insurance career in St. Louis in 1962. In 1979, he joined Commonwealth Life and Accident Insurance Company, where he served as President for four years. He joined the Unitrin group of companies in 1983 as President of United Insurance.
He served as a naval aviator from 1958 to 1962. He was attached to an Airborne Early Warning squadron operating out of Barbers Point, Hawaii, and flew VW-2 “Super Connies,” serving as Aircraft Commander from 1960 to 1962 operating out of Midway Island.
Mr. Vie also serves on the board of directors of the Executives’ Club of Chicago, and just finished his term as Chairman in September. In addition, he serves on the boards of Valparaiso University and the Concordia University Wisconsin Foundation. He attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri and St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. He lives in Chicago.
Edward K. Walker, Jr.

Rear Admiral Edward K. Walker, Jr. was born in Annapolis, MD, in 1933. As the son of a Naval Officer, he grew up in a variety of locales worldwide. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954 and was commissioned Ensign in the Supply Corps. Sea duty tours in the battleship USS NEW JERSEY (BB 62) and the destroyer USS WREN (DD 568) followed. From 1957 until 1964, he served at Naval Stations in Norfolk, VA; Rodman, Panama, Canal Zone, and at the Naval Supply Depot, Newport, RI. In his next tour he commissioned the second Polaris submarine squadron, SUBRON SIXTEEN, and deployed with it to Rota Spain to establish the first U.S. strategic missile presence on the European continent and in the Mediterranean. Upon leaving Spain, he attended the Armed Forces Staff College and subsequently was assigned as a Joint Strategic Operations Plans Officer in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. His next tour was in the submarine tender USS HOWARD W. GILMORE (AS 16) with Submarine Squadrons FOUR and TWELVE. Following this sea tour, he returned to Washington where he was the Attack Submarine Programs and Budget Officer in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Submarine Warfare. From April 1975 until June 1978, he served as Force Supply Officer on the Staff of the Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He then served two years as Executive Officer, Navy Ships Parts Control Center, Mechanicsburg, PA. In June 1980, he was ordered to the West Coast and assumed Command of the Naval Supply Center, Puget Sound, WA. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in July 1981 and reported to Norfolk where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics Readiness and Fleet Supply Officer for the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. In June 1983, he assumed duties as Assistant Comptroller of the Navy for Financial Management Systems and Commander, Navy Accounting and Financial Center. On 28 March 1984, he became Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command, and 35th Chief of Supply Corps.
During his career, RADM Walker was awarded numerous personal decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, is qualified in Submarines and as a Surface Warfare Officer. He has a Masters Degree in Business Administration and Financial Management from George Washington University.
Retiring from active duty in September 1988, RADM Walker became the Vice President for Administration and Director of Corporate Strategy for Resource Consultants, Inc. (RCI), a worldwide government services contractor. He retired from that position in September 2000. RADM Walker remains active and serves in a wide variety of endeavors including: Chairman, Vinson Hall Corporation; Member and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation; Trustee, U.S. Naval Academy Foundation; Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Herley Industries of Lancaster, PA and member of the Board of Visitors of Elon University. He is a life member of the Naval Academy Alumni Association, Submarine League, Military Officers Association, and Surface Warfare Association.
RADM Walker is a widower, having lost his Bride of 48 years in June 2002. He resides in the family home in Alexandria, VA. He has two daughters, Wendy L. of Virginia Beach, VA and Mrs. Lynn Street of Springfield, VA.

RADM Jon W. Bayless, Jr., USN (Ret)
Recently retired in October 2009, Admiral Bayless joined the Board the same month as a Director. His last Navy assignment was in the Pentagon serving as Deputy Chief, Navy Reserve. He currently resides in the Washington DC area.
Charles W. Berger
Mr. Berger is the former Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of DVDPlay, a company that created and manufactured the world’s first fully automated and remotely managed DVD rental machine. He has over 30 years executive experience in the high tech industry.
John B. Burke
Mr. Burke is Managing Director of Horizon Business Advisors, LLC, an advisory services and merchant banking firm. His consulting career includes twenty five years with Accenture in its global energy and information technology practices. Mr. Burke served in the Navy as a surface warfare officer from 1969 to 1977, aboard the USS Holder and USS Catawba.
RADM John D. Butler, USN (Ret)
Rear Admiral Butler served 31 years on active duty as a Submariner and Engineering Duty Officer, with his last flag officer assignment being Program Executive Officer Submarines. He joined Lockheed Martin upon retiring from the Navy in 2005 and is Vice President, Fleet Ballistic Missile Program for Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company.
John J. Chester, III, Esq.
Mr. Chester is a Partner at Chester, Willcox & Saxbe. He served as special counsel to President Richard Nixon, and as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. He was an executive officer on USS Carmick, and a chief engineer on the USS Hart and USS Dahlgren during World War II.
John P. Cosgrove
Mr. Cosgrove has been Secretary of the Board since 1986. He was the Chairman of the Navy Memorial Dedication Committee, and Senior Past President of the National Press Club. He is now a communications consultant. His Navy service was on Destroyer Escorts from 1942 to 1946 in the South Pacific.
Joanne Crown
Ms. Crown serves her community as a philanthropist. She is the widow of the late Captain Robert Crown, USNR, of Chicago, Illinois.
Robert C. Dorion
Mr. Dorion is a business entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist and a Navy veteran—having served on active duty for two years and in the Navy Reserves for seven years.
Dr. Barry Hannah
Dr. Hannah, of Hannah Associates, is the Head of the Reentry Systems Branch for the Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs and is the preeminent aerospace engineering leader for strategic nuclear re-entry systems.
MCPON James L. Herdt, USN (Ret)

Stuart C. Johnson
Mr. Johnson spent 33 years in the computer and communications business holding executive positions at Burroughs Corporation, Planning Research Corporation, Contel Corporation, and Bell Atlantic Corporation. He retired in 2002 as Founder, Chairman and CEO of Iconixx Corporation. Mr. Johnson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served for 5 years in naval aviation.
Jeffrey J. Kibben
Mr. Kibben is a Booz Allen Hamilton Navy/Marine Corps partner and has 30 years of professional experience, including 20 years in program, acquisition, engineering management and technical support services for the Navy’s acquisition authorities for command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) and IT. Before joining Booz Allen, Mr. Kibben served nearly 7 years as a U.S. Navy Intelligence Officer.
Thomas R. Kuhn
Mr. Kuhn is president of the Edison Electric Institute, the national association of the shareholder-owned electric companies that produce about 70 percent of the electricity generated in the United States. He has served as White House Liaison Officer to the Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Nixon and Ford, and as a supply officer aboard the USS Willard Keith.
J. Phillip London
Dr. London is Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of CACI International, Inc., a pacesetter in IT and Communications Solutions across markets throughout North America and Western Europe. He joined CACI in 1972 and, from 1984–2007, was its President and CEO. Dr. London is a 1959 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served on active duty as an aviator for 12 years during the Cold War. He served another 12 years in the Navy Reserve, attaining the rank of Captain.
Jonathan T. “Toby” Mack
Mr. Mack is Vice President of the Board. He is also President and CEO of Associated Equipment Distributors, the international trade association representing suppliers to the construction, mining and forestry industries in North America. Mr. Mack was deployed with the Seventh Fleet in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. Later he served as Aide and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia.
CAPT Gary G. Mahle, USN (Ret)
Captain Mahle is the Director of the Advanced Engineering & Sciences Division at ITT Corporation. He served as a line officer on submarines, and as an engineering duty officer and an acquisition specialist at the Strategic Systems Programs organization.
CAPT Perry Martini, USN (Ret)
Captain Martini is a 1971 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and received his Doctoral Degree in Education from George Washington University. Perry was a Naval Aviator and served in the Navy for twenty-seven years. Currently he is Director of Executive Leadership Programs at Academy Leadership, a leadership development consulting firm. RADM Donald K. Muchow, CHC, USN (Ret)
Rear Admiral Donald K. Muchow served in the United States Navy for 33 years and was the U.S. Navy’s twentieth Chief of Chaplains. As the Chief, he ensured the delivery of ministries to all personnel and their families throughout the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. From 1994-1997, he served also as the Chairman of the Armed Forces Chaplains Board on the staff of the Secretary of Defense. In recent years he has also served as an Interim Pastor with congregations in Houston, Port Isabel and Austin, TX, and assisted the NROTC training unit at the University of Texas.
Jack Mulhern
Mr. Mulhern a former Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton, which focuses on international military assistance. He was Booz Allen’s corporate representative to the U.S. Naval War College, and was a special warfare officer on the USS Cascade and USS Nitro and as a Ship Superintendent at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.
James J. Palmer
Mr. Palmer is President and Managing Director of Campbell-Ewald Advertising, the U.S. Navy’s advertising agency of record. Prior to joining Campbell-Ewald, Mr. Palmer held sales and marketing positions with Westin Hotels, Merrill Lynch, and Quarton Group Publishers.
Joseph Small, Jr., Esq.
Mr. Small is Partner-in-Charge at Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP, an international law firm in Washington, D.C. His naval service was spent in Korea as a Chinese Language Officer under the United Nations Command.
CAPT Edward A. Sundberg, USNR (Ret)
Captain Sundberg is President and founding member of Sundberg Communications Co., Inc. He is also the Joint Founder of Burruano Group, Inc., a business advisory service. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he served in the Navy as a line officer on submarines for five years and more than 30 years as a Navy Reservist.
RADM William Thompson, USN (Ret)
Rear Admiral Thompson served as the Navy’s Chief of Information from 1971 to 1975. He was the founder
and first President of the United States Navy Memorial Foundation, and a recipient of numerous awards,
including three Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award.
Victor S. Trione
Mr. Trione is President of Vimark, Inc., a Real Estate Development and Vineyard Management company, and is Chairman of the Board of Luther Burbank Savings & Loan. He formerly was an owner of Geyser Peak Winery in Northern California’s Alexander Valley. He continues a family tradition of serving as a Director of the Navy Memorial. Mr. Trione served in the Navy for two years with the rank of Lieutenant.
RADM Edward K. Walker, Jr., SC, USN (Ret)
Rear Admiral Walker is Treasurer of the Board. He is Chairman of Vinson Hall Corporation, a trustee for the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, and the former Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Herley Industries. A 1954 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he spent 34 years in the Supply Corps, ending his career as the 35th Chief of the Navy Supply Corps.

Master Chief Barnes is the National Executive Director of the Fleet Reserve Association, a non-profit organization that represents active, Reserve, retired and veterans of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. RDML Jay A. DeLoach, USN (Ret)
Rear Admiral DeLoach is the 12th Director of Naval History, Naval Historical Center. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978 and then entered service in submarines and completed ten strategic deterrent patrols. He transitioned to the Reserve Component in 1989 and serviced in various assignments ultimately being selected to flag rank in 2004. His flag assignments included Deputy Commander, Submarine Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Director of the Submarine Reserves; Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Resources, Requirements and Assessments (OPNAV N8R); and Vice Chairman, National Naval Reserve Policy Board.
