Service to Country and Community at September18 Dinner Gala

WASHINGTON, D.C. [August 3, 2012] –Navy veteran and founder of Alvarez & Associates, LLC, Commander Everett Alvarez, will be honored for his service to country and community at the United States Navy Memorial’s 2012 Lone Sailor Awards Dinner on Tuesday, September 18.  The black tie gala will be held at The National Building Museum, 401 F Street, NW, Washington, D.C.

The Lone Sailor Award is given to Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their respective civilian careers while exemplifying the Navy core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.  In receiving the Lone Sailor Award, CDR Alvarez, joins an impressive list of men and women who have distinguished themselves by drawing upon their military experience.

“My Naval service experience, a rather exceptional one, gave me the rare opportunity, the lessons of which I have carried and applied to this day,” comments CDR Alvarez. “I was one of a group of individuals, thrust into the most difficult and trying circumstances, who built a high-performing and resilient organizational culture in order to survive a cruel POW environment.  Thanks to this organizational culture, we survived and returned to our beloved country with our personal integrity intact, and with our honor.  This accomplishment is something that no one can take away from us. I am humbled and deeply honored to be considered for this coveted and prestigious award.”

Commander Everett Alvarez, founder of Alvarez & Associates, LLC, an IT solutions company based in Washington, DC, served in the Navy for 20 years and retired as a Commander.  CDR Alvarez was the first American aviator to be shot down and held as POW during the Vietnam War and is the second longest-held POW in American history.  He has been awarded the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, two Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Purple Heart Medals.  Prior to starting his own company, he served as Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, Deputy Administrator of the Veterans Administration, and Chairman of the CARES Commission, an independent panel recommending critical change within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Commander Alvarez holds honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Santa Clara, his alma mater, and the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center.  He has also authored two books – “Chained Eagle”, an historical account of his experiences during his captivity in Vietnam, and “Code of Conduct”, the story of the rebuilding of his life upon return from Vietnam.  CDR Alvarez is the father of two, Marc and Bryan, and currently resides in Rockville, Maryland with his wife Tammy.

The U.S. Navy Memorial will also honor three other distinguished veterans at the gala.  John Paul DeJoria served in the Navy for two years before co-creating two powerhouse companies – John Paul Mitchell Systems, a revolutionary hair care line; and Patron Spirits, which sells over two million cases of tequila and other spirits annually.  After serving for four years as a line officer aboard a Coast Guard icebreaker in the Arctic and Antarctic, David Power, founder of J.D. Power and Associates, one of the most prestigious marketing firms in the world, helped pioneer the customer satisfaction field.  Mark Russell, political satirist and Marine veteran, has spent several decades delighting audiences with his daring stand-up routines and musical parodies.
