Two DC Events Hosted to Honor Veterans Day

October 26, 2017 (Washington, DC) -- The United States Navy Memorial will host two events in early November dedicated to the Veteran community. The first will be a continuance of the Navy Memorial’s Authors on Deck book lecture series. Command Master Chief Charles Baldwin, USN (Ret.), will be presenting on his book, Carrier to Classroom. He will be available for a Q&A session and book signing following the presentation. The Veterans Day Wreath Laying Ceremony will take place the following day. The Navy Memorial is honored to have Master Chief Baldwin as a guest speaker for this occasion as well.

This special event will also feature remarks from the Navy Memorial and Naval District Washington officials along with musical performances by the United States Navy Band. The ceremony will conclude with a wreath laying at the Lone Sailor statue.

These programs are part of an ongoing effort by the Navy Memorial to promote public understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of the Sea Services.

Charles W. Baldwin

Command Master Chief Charles Baldwin, USN (Ret.), has enjoyed a distinguished career in both the military and public education.  

Master Chief Baldwin’s wartime service includes deployments to Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. For his efforts during Operation Desert Shield as Command Master Chief of the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. In 1992, he was one of four finalists for the Navy’s top enlisted post of Master Chief of the Navy.

After retiring from the Navy, Baldwin accepted the position of Associate Naval Science Instructor with the Seaford School District where he established the first Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps in the State of Delaware. His NJROTC units received awards for five State Drill Championships and one national championship for best overall uniform appearance.

In 2003, Master Chief Baldwin co-founded the Delaware Military Academy and served as its Commandant. Delaware Military Academy is now the largest NJROTC program in the United States.

Master Chief Baldwin holds a master’s degree in Secondary School Leadership from Wilmington University and has served on the Delaware Principals Academy Executive Board. Baldwin was recently awarded the Delaware Distinguished Service Medal and the thanks of the 111th US Congress for his work in education. He now serves as a Commissioner on the Delaware Veterans Commission. He has authored a book on school leadership titled Carrier to Classroom.
